Winter Skin Solutions

According to about 90% of beauty blogs, magazines, etc., I’m not alone in suffering from flaky, dry, dull skin during the winter months. My dreams of looking like a baby vampire are never far from my mind, so my skin can be reigned in for the most part now that I treat it right. Things like cold winter air and unforgiving car heaters can throw a wrench in it though. This collection of products are what I’m using the combat my winter skin.

Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration Treatment Mask // This isn’t my favorite mask of all time (I’ll explain why in a second), but when my skin needs hydrating, this calms and soothes while moisturizing. You apply a generous amount like a regular mask and then you’re supposed to let it absorb in for 10-15 minutes before wiping off the excess/rubbing it in. It starts with a thick, creamy consistency that has that fresh clary sage smell, but it’s the excess/rubbing in part that always gets me. I feel like it doesn’t come all the way off or absorb completely, and what’s leftover is more waxy than creamy. Sometimes I’ll apply a thinner layer 30 minutes before bed and just leave it on to sleep.

boscia Tsubaki Cleansing Oil-Gel // When my skin’s already dry, the last thing I want to do is use a cleanser that’s going to leave my face feeling tight and awful. This oil-gel cleanser smells like roses and can remove light makeup/everyday grime without stripping natural oils. I love how popular oils and oil cleansers have become because they really are wonderful, even for people with oily or combination skin.

Josie Maran 100 Percent Pure Argan Oil & Argan Infinity Cream Intensive Creamy Oil // Did I mention I love oils? Here, have some more oil love talk. I add three-four drops of the 100 Percent Pure Argan Oil to my regular Cetaphil in the morning to give myself a boost of moisturizing power during the day. I save the Creamy Oil for my evening routine. On top of being good for my skin, I’ve also been able to add them to my nail and hair regimen. I’m so happy I saved up the 500 Beauty Point things at Sephora and got the Josie Maran deluxe sample set.

Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Water-Max Sleeping Mask // Sleeping masks are great because you can just wake up looking great. This one is amazing because it helps seal in your nighttime moisturizer while adding its own benefits. It has hyaluronic acid macromolecule (one of my favorite acids!) for hydration and nine essential oils that smell amazing and promote a feeling of comfort and restfulness (or so they say).

Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask // This is the one I’m on the fence about. I included it because I am currently using it because my lips suffer most during winter. It has great reviews and it does feel good when I apply it before bed (after exfoliating gently), but I just don’t feel like it’s the holy grail of lip masks I read about. A little goes a long way, but it’s way too expensive (I had a coupon and was desperate). I hope it comes back and surprises me. To be fair, my chapped mouth is 70% from biting and licking my lips subconsciously and less from chronic dryness, so any improvement is quickly chewed away.

Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition Miracle Dry Oil for Hair, Body & Face // I’m less a fan of this particular dry oil and more a proponent of any sprayable dry oil. My legs just absolutely kill and itch and burn after a shower in the winter even if I don’t shave (which is basically never at this point in my life – freedom!), but if I spray this on before I hop into the shower, my leg skin is less itchy and sad afterwards. I don’t really advocate this particular one for hair and face, but for a body oil, it smells good and doesn’t feel greasy. Works as a great moisture barrier to keep shower water from leeching any hydration from my legs!

Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs & Rosewater // My love! This isn’t just for winter, but since it’s a big part of my skin care year round now, it wouldn’t be fair to leave it out. When I first wake up, I spritz this on before applying my morning moisturizer. Skin is most receptive when it’s damp, so if I haven’t conveniently just stepped out of the shower, this is the best alternative. It smells lovely and feels so refreshing, plus it can be used to set or refresh makeup as well. Would recommend for everyone forever.

P.S. Today is my birthday! I’m actually writing this the day before my birthday, but it’ll publish when I’m hitting the insignificant 2-7. I really love my birthday (and birthdays in general) and I always try to keep with the idea that getting older isn’t something to be scared of, especially the notion that you need to be at a certain place in life by a certain time. Between older friends and family, I have so many fantastic examples of how age is not a limiter in any way, and it may seem silly to be thinking about it so much when I’m only 27, but I also know how terrifying it is for a lot of people my age (and younger!) to think about growing older. Sometimes when I’m eating boxed and cheese in my onesie cat pajamas, I can’t believe that I’m considered an adult at all. I don’t even know what I’m rambling about any more, but happy birthday to me and any other December babbies!

June Birchbox Reviews

I did it! When Birchbox did their big relaunch it’d been about half a year since I unsubscribed so I could go through my huge backlog of samples. The relaunch definitely got my sample fever going and this box didn’t disappoint.

1. Postcards // Given that I don’t send postcards and I don’t really travel anywhere that cool, I probably won’t get a chance to send these out, but they are cute! I’ll keep them in my little box of neat paper goods.

2. Birchbox + Color Club Wanderlust Collection in London Calling // I was really excited about this because I KNEW I’d get one of the colors. I was kind of bummed though because I wanted the purple or the grayish one and I got the neon pistachio shade. It’s cool for summer but it’s just not what I’d usually pick. The formula lasted a pretty long time and was very creamy, but I noticed that even though it was really thick, it still came out streaky on a few nails.

3. Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle // This was the hero of this box. It smells great and I can comb through my hair like a dream. I put it in after I shower when my hair’s still damp. My hair air dries and the next day it’s soft and silky. I’m considering buying the full size of this because it’s so good.

4. Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream in Blueberry // If you like blueberries and smooth legs, this is a fun product. It reminds me a lot of my EOS shaving cream because it’s so thick and non-drying, but the scent is much stronger and fruitier.

5. Juicy Couture’s Couture La La // It’s described as a mix of mandarin, red currant, lily, and orange blossom. I’ll keep this one in my bag for freshening up during the day, but I wasn’t blown away. The scent is pleasant and sweet, so if you want something safe but summery, it’s a winner.

6. Tili Bag // I may not travel anywhere cool, but but I do a lot of traveling (especially with my sweet baby sister getting married soon! Lots of showers and visits!) and this bag was a great addition to my other make-up baggies. If you’re worried about shampoos or moisturizers leaking or getting onto your other packed goodies, these plastic bags keep all your liquid products where they can’t get to anything else. They’ve got neat patterns too because packaging is important.

Soo you can look forward to Birchbox reviews every month again. Unless it’s a cruddy box. I won’t bore you with a cruddy box, I promise. If you aren’t already signed up and you want the giddy pleasure of getting a box full of goodies every month, sign up here.

Garden Party Spring Flings

I don’t get into a lot of the springtime clothing trends (other than wearing less clothing in general), but I do love using products that put me in a warm weather mood. I threw together some of my favorite floral/fruit/fresh feeling beauty thingies as of late.

Strawberry Sponge Hair Curlers

I’m hoping to do a full review on these as soon as next week, but for now I can talk about them and just revel in how adorable they are. I love rag rolls but they are a pain for me to tie up properly, so when I saw these sponge rollers starting to pop up (the original ones I saw were plain and yellow like yo-yos), I hopped on Amazon and looked around for some cheap ones. Of course I stumble upon these strawberry shaped ones and I was smitten. You just roll you hair from the ends up in a bunch of these little beauties, fall asleep and then wake up to bouncy curls! My hair has gotten very long, so I need quite a few. I actually have nine of these total but I have enough hair that I should probably order another set of three. They’ve been nice to take some heat out of my styling routine.

Blossom Scented Lip Gloss in Raspberry

If you couldn’t tell, I was mostly drawn to the look and packaging of this gloss. I also didn’t have a plain clear gloss before this one, so it’s nice to have something I can slap over a lip color that’s going a little dry or just a naked lip. It’s more of an oil that a gloss, so it absorbs into the lips fairly quickly, but when you first put it on it has a little bit of a slip. The raspberry scent is light but nice, and there’s no taste to it. The flowers in there are just a beautiful added bit.

Caudalie Beauty Elixir

This is amazing. I’ve always had a hard time explaining what this does and why I’m willing to shell out $18 for 1 oz. I didn’t even use it very much the first time I bought it because I’d gone in asking for a small fragrance/mist to use when I wanted to freshen up after working outside in the summer, and this is more of a toner. It’s so much more though! In the hot weather especially, I keep this in my purse to spritz on my face when I’m getting sweaty and gross. It’s like a floral water with extra oils to refresh and soothe your complexion. I totally understand that it’s a lot of dollars for such a small amount, but it’s such a wonderful product. I should probably look into cheaper rose water or something though because it’s going fast.

I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend! We don’t have anything special planned but I’m really excited because Mark and I both have Monday off and that’s always fun to hang out and cook and play with Elvira. We’re very exciting obviously.
