OPI Glitter Off Natural Nail Base Coat

OPIGlitterOff1I started researching peelable base coats awhile back because even though I love glitter nail polishes, they’re really more trouble than they’re worth to get off your nails. The feeling of cotton balls catching on glitter bits while you try to scrub them off just makes my skin crawl. Ech. I shuddered just typing it.

Anyhow, Essence and OPI seemed to make the most noteworthy ones, and using Mark’s Amazon Prime, I ordered the OPI’s version. Why these things aren’t readily available in regular stores I just don’t know. Ugh.

Even though it looks white and goopy, it actually dries clear on the nail. ALSO – If you have spare nail polish bottles laying around, the main ingredients in this stuff is basically two parts Elmer’s glue and one part water. I haven’t personally tried that concoction but I’ve seen a few DIYs on the internet that show it works just as good as the ones made by actual nail polish companies. OPIGlitterOff2This was with one coat of the base coat. Make sure you let the base coat dry completely before you apply the nail polish. I waited a full day before trying to peel off the Zoya Pixie Dust polish (one of my least favorite to remove but a favorite to wear). I used a cuticle pusher toward the base of my nail bed and it started to peel up very easily. It still took some doing toward the end. You can see that it came off in bits instead of one really satisfying piece like I’d hoped. There were still a few glittery spots clinging to the edge of my nails that made for easy cleanup. As you can see, my nail is free of 99% of the polish but they do look dry. Rub some cuticle oil/cream or argan oil on and they’re just fine. OPIGlitterOff3This was with two layers of the base coat. I only waited a few hours before trying to remove it because I’m impatienttttt, so keep that in mind when comparing the results. It was much easier to get the nail polish off with two layers underneath. See how it’s all bunched up and gummy looking? It just balled up as I pushed instead of flipping up like a scale on the first try. I think the best way is just to do a very thick single layer of the base coat instead of two.

ETA: OKAY here’s a quick update. This base coat does not hold up well if your hands are spending a lot of time in warm water. The polish just slides off intact when I’m washing my hair or if I take a bath. So take that as you will. If you like to bathe/wash your hair, watch your nails. It’s weird, but I actually just put a thin base coat on and then put the intact polish back on. It was like putting on a fake nail. Nails are weird.

I worried that the removable quality of the base coat would make the polish itself not stay as well, but so far that hasn’t been the case. I’m really excited about the prospect of wearing my glitter polishes more without totally dreading the removal process the entire time. I’m gonna sparkle so hard.

OCC Black Dahlia Nail Polish

It doesn’t feel like fall will be here soon, but I figured painting my nails dark burgundy couldn’t hurt. It’ll help me forget that I live in Texas and it’s totally normal to have it still reaching 100 degrees in September.

Now, I love the color of this, but I will admit that the formula isn’t the greatest which is disappointing given that OCC is a little higher end. By the second day I had one or two chips, and it was easy enough to touch them up and reapply a top coat, but normally I don’t have to do that until day four or five. I needed two coats for it to be totally opaque, but that’s pretty standard. Overall it has average performance and needs a tough topcoat or regular touch-ups.

These pictures are from day four after touching up the tips, so they’re a little grown out. Thanks Biotin for making my nails grow weirdly fast. I feel like I apologize for my dry cuticles in every nail post, and I’m going to do it again. I’ve been using Essie’s Apricot Cuticle Oil and they look good after, but I haven’t been diligent about using it. One day I’ll have soft, barely there cuticles.

Bows & Mannequins

zoyataylorbow1Bow Corsage Cuff from the ERIN FETHERSTON x JM Studio Series & Zoya’s Taylor nail polish from the Naturel Collection

I hope no one looks down on me for buying a nail polish based totally on the fact that it has my name. You just don’t find things named Taylor very often! To be fair, it’s actually a really great natural shade to have because sometimes I just want to have mannequin nails. It’s a warmer color than Revlon’s Bare Bones which is what I usually wear when I want a nude nail. It wore well for three-four days with a topcoat before I saw the first chip, and with a new topcoat after that third day I didn’t see any significant wear for another two-three days. No regrets!

I’m so glad that this bow cuff came out right before Valentine’s Day because it’s been awhile since I’ve watched a piece of jewelry so bad, and luckily Mark got one before they went on back order! It’s still a little chilly in North Texas so it doesn’t work when I have to wear a coat, but it was great for our warm weather spell a week ago, and it’ll be great when it’s t-shirt temperature for the long haul. Even though I have a healthy love of all things black, I do have a soft spot for bows, and I’ve really enjoyed some of Erin Fetherston’s collaborations (I loved her Go International line for Target way back when).

And on an unrelated note, today is my sister Jordan’s birthday! I got to visit her this past weekend and even though visits are always too short, they’re always much-anticipated. I hope you have a great day today, Jordo!

Zoya Lotus Swatch & Review

I actually got this polish over a year ago from Becca, but I haven’t worn it in a few months. It was in a Birchbox and she wasn’t a fan, but I love me a muted purple color. I had a pretty low key New Year’s with friends, so instead of big sparkly nails I went for a more subtle shimmer. In natural light it’s a purple with a neutral tone, but with the flash on my camera you can see that it has really fine, red glitter in it!

The longevity on this is pretty good. I put it one with a basecoat and topcoat Saturday night and it didn’t chip at all until Wednesday night. Usually I reapply the topcoat after two days to help a mani last longer, but I forgot this time. Whoops!

I love Zoya nail polishes, so my only complaint is that I feel like they all have a bit of a shrinkage issue – the tip of my real nail always seems to show a little once the polish dries. This has happened with different top coats as well, so your best bet is to make sure you take the polish all the way to the very end of your nail so it’s less noticeable.

I hope everyone’s having a good year so far! It’s always a really exciting time for me because I do have a tendency to get caught up in the whole resolutions business, but this year I’m keeping it all relatively simple and realistic so there isn’t as much pressure and I’m more confident I’ll stick with more of them than I did last year.

Essie’s Master Plan Review

essie-masterplan2I think I’ve found my perfect gray/purple nail polish. My grurple. I was wary at first because I have a lot of dark gray-beige colors and I have one or two light lilac polishes, so I thought getting another similar shade would be silly, BUT I’m so happy I did.

The formula is just as nice as the color. Sometimes Essie’s polishes chip easy even with a topcoat, but this one stayed on without noticable chipping for four days. Even then, it was only one or two chips on my index and middle finger (the first to chip with any polish I wear). In the photos the polish looks a little lumpy because I wanted to touch it up for the photos (this was after 6 days so I was ready to change), but when I originally applied it, it went on smooth and opaque after two coats.

I know I need to cut down on nail polish colors because I have waaaay too many, but this is one I’m glad I picked up because I’m going to wear it a LOT. This might get the same treatment that my Rimmel Steel Gray got (the only polish I’ve ever completely finished before it dried out). I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a neutral that’s different than pink or nude.
