PIXI Beauty Shea Butter Lip Balm in Pixi Pink

PIXI Beauty Shea Butter Lip Balm in Pixi Pink

I don’t know if I’ve ever taken to a tinted lip balm so hard and so fast. I’ve definitely never felt the urge to review something so fast! I got this in my Birchbox and everything else was okay, but this little tube of lip balm is a game changer.

The color is so amazing and bright and springy. I have a hard time with lighter pinks, but this lays on such a healthy wash of color while at the same time letting enough of my natural lip color through to make sure it looks right on me. It’s lightweight too! The moisture and pigment lasts a long time but it doesn’t dry out my lips and it leaves an amazingly even stain that lasts throughout the day.

It’s hard to put into words how much I love it and how good it feels and how cute I think I look with it. If I didn’t already have so many lip products, I’d be tempted to pick up some of their other shades. I hope that the other colors are just as flattering and don’t dry out or feel bad. If I ever make a dent in my lip color treasure trove, I’ll be picked up some additional colors. I got mine in my Birchbox but they’re also at Target if you want to get it from a storefront.

P.S. I’m wearing the Dr. Jart+ BB Cream (from this last post) here, so you can see how it looks if anyone’s interested. I don’t have any other skin products on minus some under-eye concealer so you can see that’s it’s good at evening out skin tone while still looking natural. I’d say the finish is halfway between matte and dewy.

What’s in My Bag: Lake House Edition

Nikon 1 J3 with COSMOS Brown Leather Case // Sleep Pillow Mist in Lavender Chamomile // Black and Gold Heart Sunglasses // Julia Wine Cat Sleeping Mask // Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

Today I’m heading out for a much-needed weekend trip with some of Mark and I’s closest friends. We rented a lake house and are going to eat great food and hang out by the water and it’s going to be amazing. I’m really bad at not taking vacations, so I’ve been looking forward to this for months. I’m not taking much, but I love a good “What’s in My Bag” posts, so here’s what is tagging along with me this weekend (minus the obvious stuff like clothes, toothbrush, SPF 1000 sunscreen).

Dr. Jart+ Black Label Detox BB Cream // I almost never wear full foundation anymore, and I’m certainly not going to on a lake vacation, so this is great for a breathable, hydrating base with SPF. It’s light to medium coverage, so I mainly use it to even out my redness a bit, but you can build it up a little bit more if you need more. Too much though and it gets greasy on me. I reviewed the gold bottle Dr. Jart+ awhile back and had that problem, but it turns out I was just using too much! When used correctly, it’s a dream. I love their whole line, including this black label, but my favorite is the gold. It only comes in one self-adjusting shade though, so if you have medium to dark skin, this one would be a miss.

NYX Butter Gloss in Strawberry Parfait // I feel like most lip colors smear or feel weird in water, so I try to stick with something that’s balmy, and I loooove these butter glosses. I usually stick to mattes, but as dry as my lips are, I’ve started to embrace the gloss. This one is a nice, flattering pink, and it smells delicious. It doesn’t last super long if you’re eating or drinking, but it leaves your lips hydrated, and the smell makes reapplying worth it.

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Black // This one cost me a pretty penny, but I can’t get over how precise and fine a line I get with it. Cateye is my go-to eye look, and this makes it so easy. The formula lasts forever and can even be a pain to get off, but I like my eye makeup to stay in place. When I swatched it at Sephora the first time, it stayed on my hand clear through a shower into the next day! I can get so close to the lashline, it blows my mind every time. Waterproof isn’t necessary for everyday, but it’s good for trips like this.

L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Waterproof Mascara // Still my favorite waterproof + voluminizing mascara. I’ve had this in bag posts before. The formula can be a little clumpy if you don’t scrape the excess off of the wand. If it clumps, I use a q-tip to even them out and then apply a second coat.

French Lavender & Honey Body Mist // Running around outside is a good way to get smelly. That’s when I prefer body-mists to perfume. I can get a few good pumps and don’t have to worry about it being overpowering. This one from Bath & Body Works smells sweet without being cloying, with notes of lavender, honey and nectarine. My mom sent me the mini in a care-package and it’s perfect for keeping in my regular purse bag, not just for traveling.

Gilchrist & Soames London Collection Body Lotion // I got this in my Birchbox a few months back (why did I stop reviewing those boxes?) and to be honest it wasn’t incredible, but it’s nice and it’s travel size. It doesn’t have a strong smell and it’s cruelty-free, plus it absorbs fast and has a lot of natural emollients.

Davines This Is a Sea Salt Spray // This is also from an old Birchbox but I love it! I braid my hair a lot on water-based trips, and nothing adds good texture like a salt spray. It smells like candy and makes my hair feel like second day hair without being dirty or drying it out.

Love & Beauty Nail Polish in Baby Blue // I have a soft spot for jelly polishes. Normally I hate when you can see through after several coats, but with jelly I don’t mind. It’s just like a nice wash of color on your nails, and this one has a fine blue shimmer going through it. Makes me think of the color of a pool!

OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo & Conditioner // Another case of, “ehhh it’s okay but it’s travel sized!” These smell so so so good but I don’t think I’d use them every day. They weigh my hair down a little, but between, sweat, sunscreen and lakewater, they do a great job of leaving my hair smooth and tangle-free. They have egg proteins to strengthen your hair too which helps with breakage, and since I’m always growing my hair out, I love anything that keeps me from losing my ends to splits and break-off.

And that’s it! Have a great weekend!

July 2013 Birchbox

1. Atelier Cologne Mistral Patchouli // Now let me begin by saying that I usually hate patchouli, but I love pepper notes, so that won me over. I was surprised by how much I ended up liking it. It’s a little strong, but a dab behind each ear isn’t so much that I can’t wear it for a more casual day. It also has grapefruit notes, so it’s a good mix of earthy and a touch of not-to-sweet fruit. The postcard was a nice touch. I’m going to tack it up above my desk because the colors are lovely.

2. Birchbox Bobby Pins // These are tough! They really do hold onto the hair great. All my other bobby pins are hair colored and I use them for buns with the intention of hiding them, but these are cute so I don’t mind having them on full display. They actually hold my wily, piecey bangs in place when I want to keep them off my forehead. I wish they had them in colors closer to what I wear everyday (read: black, white or gray), but I have a soft spot for blue sometimes (like now apparently).

3. DDF Acne Control Treatment // I haven’t really used this much since I don’t break out that often. I did put it on a small blemish on my chin and it was less red in the morning, but I don’t feel like I’ve had a chance to see what it’s capable of. I do get some lovely shoulder/back acne in the dead of summer, so hopefully this will help keep that in check once my body succumbs to August’s humidity and sebum over-production.

4. Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk // The formula of this is great, but I think what I liked about it most was that it was a sample size right when I needed a dry shampoo for the road. This didn’t leave a white cast on my hair, which was extra important given my super dark color now. It had no unpleasant odor and is awesome at pumping up my bangs when they start to get limp. I’d be really eager to buy it if I saw it in stores around me. I feel weird sometimes buying certain things online. I’ll almost always choose the convenience of a physical store for items that I go through quickly. I have to use dry shampoo pretty much every day in my bangs so I blow through it.

5. theBalm cosmetics InStain Long-Wearing Powder Staining Blush in Swiss Dot // The color on this is great for summer, and the idea of a powder stain is really interesting to me, but a little goes a long way. If you have trouble with gels or cream blushes, I’d recommend it, but be prepared to apply in moderation and make sure your blending is up to snuff. I haven’t worn it to a pool or anything yet, but I straight up splashed water on my face with the blush on and it faded a little, but I needed make-up remover to completely get rid of it.

Left: Straight application // Right: Diffused/Blended

And it would be a crime to not show off the top my mom sent me in a care package. My love of rabbits is only too obvious from my wardrobe. I also had the honor of receiving a crop top tee with a giant cat face on it. I may be an adult now (weird), but a care package from my mom after a tough week at work makes me feel like a little kid again. Even though my upcoming travels will take a toll on my gas money, I’m really glad that I’ll be seeing a lot of my mom and the rest of my family over the next two months. No matter how long I’ve been moved out or how often I get to see them, I can’t help but get homesick.

Anyways, I hope everyone else who got a Birchbox in July was happy with theirs! The blush and the dry shampoo have gotten a lot of use but I was a fan of the whole thing. I’ll try to get the next one out a little sooner in the month. We’ll see how that goes!

June Birchbox Reviews

I did it! When Birchbox did their big relaunch it’d been about half a year since I unsubscribed so I could go through my huge backlog of samples. The relaunch definitely got my sample fever going and this box didn’t disappoint.

1. Postcards // Given that I don’t send postcards and I don’t really travel anywhere that cool, I probably won’t get a chance to send these out, but they are cute! I’ll keep them in my little box of neat paper goods.

2. Birchbox + Color Club Wanderlust Collection in London Calling // I was really excited about this because I KNEW I’d get one of the colors. I was kind of bummed though because I wanted the purple or the grayish one and I got the neon pistachio shade. It’s cool for summer but it’s just not what I’d usually pick. The formula lasted a pretty long time and was very creamy, but I noticed that even though it was really thick, it still came out streaky on a few nails.

3. Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle // This was the hero of this box. It smells great and I can comb through my hair like a dream. I put it in after I shower when my hair’s still damp. My hair air dries and the next day it’s soft and silky. I’m considering buying the full size of this because it’s so good.

4. Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream in Blueberry // If you like blueberries and smooth legs, this is a fun product. It reminds me a lot of my EOS shaving cream because it’s so thick and non-drying, but the scent is much stronger and fruitier.

5. Juicy Couture’s Couture La La // It’s described as a mix of mandarin, red currant, lily, and orange blossom. I’ll keep this one in my bag for freshening up during the day, but I wasn’t blown away. The scent is pleasant and sweet, so if you want something safe but summery, it’s a winner.

6. Tili Bag // I may not travel anywhere cool, but but I do a lot of traveling (especially with my sweet baby sister getting married soon! Lots of showers and visits!) and this bag was a great addition to my other make-up baggies. If you’re worried about shampoos or moisturizers leaking or getting onto your other packed goodies, these plastic bags keep all your liquid products where they can’t get to anything else. They’ve got neat patterns too because packaging is important.

Soo you can look forward to Birchbox reviews every month again. Unless it’s a cruddy box. I won’t bore you with a cruddy box, I promise. If you aren’t already signed up and you want the giddy pleasure of getting a box full of goodies every month, sign up here.

November Birchbox: Giving

1. John Varvatos Artisan //  I didn’t notice at first that this was meant as a gift to share with a man in your life, so I wondered why it smelled so masculine. I thought it was citrusy and clean smelling, but still had that distinct cologne smell. Oddly enough when I let my mister Mark smell it, he didn’t think it was meant for men at all. On the Birchbox website, it’s described as a “fresh-from-the-shower cologne” with “Sicilian clementine, Mexican mandarin, and tangelo with woody base notes like kephalis and Georgywood. There are hints of thyme, too, and musky serenolide”. Mark said he thought it smelled pleasant but not very unique. I agree. I like my men to smell spicy.

2. Birchbox Keychain // Even though it’s pink. I have a feeling I’ll be using this quite a bit. When I go out, I usually take my keys, an id, money, and a lipstick. Now I can put my lipstick in this convenient pouch so it’s not floating loose.

3. Oscar Blandi Pronto Texture & Volume Spray // I still don’t know if I’m using texturing sprays right, but I’ve heard great things about Oscar Blandi and I definitely like it better than any of the beach texturing sprays I’ve tried. It gives some body and moldability to my hair, but I’m still put off by the slightly tacky feeling my hair gets, but that goes for any volumizing powder or spray I’ve used. It just feels like my hair is sticking together in a lump. The smell did put me off a bit. It doesn’t linger, but when it first comes out of the can, it has a weird blend of pepper and bleach. Like I said, it’s weird, but it fades very quickly.

4. ModelCo FIBRE LASHXTEND Lengthening Mascara // It does just what it says it will. It adds a good bit of length to my lashes and it doesn’t clump. It flaked a tiny bit but nothing crazy. You can see the results below on this beautiful closeup of my eyes (sarcasm, why did I not fill in my brows before taking this). I applied the LASHXTEND to the eye to the left and the other eye has nothing on it.

5. Mox Botanicals Lip Butter in  Fig & Pomegranate // This feels really nice when first applied, and the little container is cute and portable. Unfortunately the effects are short-lived. I have to reapply it constantly. It smells good, but I’m mainly just using it out of habit because I keep it right by my sink. No dice.

6. Foldable Gift Box // Not sure when I’ll use this because it’s not really my wrapping style, but it IS very convenient and cute, so I’m sure I’ll find something to put in it since Christmas is right around the corner (yaaaay!)

Not Pictured: LA FRESH® Eco Beauty Waterproof Makeup Remover // These came in little one-use packets. They worked well and left my skin feeling moisturized. The wipes had oil in them to help remove waterproof makeup, so I think that’s why my skin didn’t feel dry like most wipes do. They smelled like lavender which is not my favorite smell, but I’m finding it to be very popular lately so I’ll just have to deal.

Overall a really good box! I was pretty disappointed last month, but this one has me hanging in there for at least one more. I love Birchbox’s point program and their wide range of products, but I think I’m going to use my existing points to buy some gifts (and maybe grab the rollerball of Kate Spade’s Twirl heeey) and then call it quits for awhile. I just have so many samples I’m still working through and it makes it hard to pare down my beauty collection.
